STOP AND SMELL THE SHAKAS

The Hawaiian shirt is a brand, an unambiguous symbol of relaxation worldwide. The shaka says "hang loose." Sonny loves the way the four shakas create a natural flower design.

SHADES OF HAWAII

The first image of Hawaiians in the western world was an etching from the HMS Endeavor ships artist, John Weber, on Captain Cooks voyage to the Sandwich Islands in 1778. Dusting off this old image, Sonny created a silkscreen and added a few flourishes including sunglasses that reflect Waikiki on Diamond Head a la the Hollywood sign. The juxtaposition of the contemporary with the classic takes something old and makes it nu’u again.

MAUI ROCKET TO PLANET HAWAII

The subtitle is "Going Global." This is a passage from a mixed media painting, silkscreen, and collage, on canvas, and several levels of plexiglass, that reflects an interest in how layered our perceptions have become under the influence of incessant media. We see more images, in one day, than our ancestors saw in a lifetime. The original mixed media painting took a year to create
